Wine country private aviation comes down to three destinations, each with a distinct airport profile. Napa Valley uses Napa County Airport (APC), a 5,007-foot runway 5 miles south of downtown Napa that handles 35,000+ annual aircraft operations. Sonoma County is served by Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), which has a 5,115-foot runway and commercial service from a few regional carriers. Oregon's Willamette Valley uses Portland International (PDX) or McMinnville Municipal (MMV) as gateways.
The airport choice shapes the trip. APC is the closest field to Napa's estate wineries. STS is 15 minutes from Healdsburg and the Russian River appellations. McMinnville Municipal puts you in the heart of Willamette Pinot Noir country without the 60-minute drive from Portland. Knowing which field to target determines which aircraft work, what the positioning costs look like, and how much ground time you need.
Napa County Airport (APC): The Default Gateway
APC is a non-towered airport at 33 feet elevation with a single runway (18L/36R) measuring 5,007 feet. Jonesy Aviation operates the sole FBO on the field, providing fuel, ground handling, hangar parking, and concierge services including winery transportation arrangement. The airport is 5 miles south of downtown Napa, 20 minutes from Yountville, and 35 minutes from St. Helena and Calistoga at the upper valley.
Aircraft Restrictions at APC
The 5,007-foot runway limits aircraft selection. Light jets (Phenom 300, CJ3, CJ4) operate comfortably. Midsize jets (Citation XLS, Hawker 800XP) are within limits at typical operating weights but require pilot familiarity with short-field procedures. Super-midsize and heavy jets (Challenger 350, G550, Global 6000) cannot operate at APC. Charter passengers arriving on larger aircraft use Oakland (OAK), San Francisco (SFO), or Sacramento (SMF) and ground-transfer.
APC has no control tower, which means no sequenced approach control during peak periods. During harvest season (September-October) and major wine events, the pattern gets congested. Pilots should expect 10-15 minute delays for traffic on busy Saturday mornings.
Sonoma County Airport (STS): The Quieter Alternative
Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport offers a 5,115-foot runway with a control tower, ILS approach, and two FBOs: Sonoma Jet Center and Kaiser Air. STS is 7 miles north of Santa Rosa and 15 minutes from Healdsburg, which has become the epicenter of Sonoma wine culture. The Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley appellations are all within 20-30 minutes.
STS is less congested than APC and has instrument approaches that keep it operational in the morning fog that regularly blankets the North Bay. For clients flying from the Pacific Northwest or interior West, STS avoids the Bay Area airspace complexity that adds flight time when routing through Oakland or SFO sectors.

Oregon's Willamette Valley produces some of the most sought-after Pinot Noir in the world. The wine regions stretch from Portland south through McMinnville, Dundee, and Salem. Airport options split between Portland International (PDX) for all aircraft types and McMinnville Municipal (MMV) for light aircraft and turboprops.
MMV has a 5,419-foot runway at 163 feet elevation. The field is uncontrolled with no instrument approaches in some configurations, limiting operations to VFR conditions. For light jets, MMV works and puts passengers 5 minutes from downtown McMinnville and the Dundee Hills wine estates. For midsize and larger jets, PDX is the gateway. The drive from PDX to McMinnville is approximately 45 minutes.
Why Oregon Wine Country Attracts Private Flyers
Willamette Valley has a different character than Napa. Smaller production wineries. Less commercial infrastructure. More intimate tasting experiences. A group of six arriving by private jet to McMinnville can schedule 4-5 private tastings in a day, each at estate wineries producing 500-2,000 cases annually. This is the kind of itinerary that does not work with airline connections and rental cars.
Itinerary Planning: Day Trip vs Multi-Day
A same-day wine country trip by private jet works from any origin within 600 NM of APC or STS. Depart Los Angeles at 8:00 AM, arrive Napa by 9:15 AM, visit 3-4 wineries, dinner at The French Laundry in Yountville, and return to Van Nuys by 10:00 PM. Total aircraft cost: $11,000-$15,000 for a light jet round trip. Split among 4-6 passengers, that is $2,500-$3,750 per person for a day that would otherwise require an overnight hotel, rental car, and commercial flights on both ends.
Recommended Multi-Day Structure
- Day 1: Arrive APC midday. Afternoon tastings at 2-3 Napa estates. Dinner in Yountville or St. Helena.
- Day 2: Morning balloon ride or bike ride. Full-day Napa tasting: Stag's Leap, Opus One, Dominus, or smaller cult producers.

For the multi-day itinerary, most charter clients position the aircraft at APC overnight and pay parking/crew overnight fees ($500-$1,500 per night). Helicopter transfers between APC and specific properties (or between Napa and Sonoma) are available through several operators. A 15-minute helicopter flight from APC to a Sonoma estate costs $1,500-$2,500. It is unnecessary from a transport standpoint but memorable as an experience.
Most luxury properties in Napa and Sonoma, including Meadowood, Calistoga Ranch, and The Madrona, offer airport pickup at APC or STS as part of their guest services. Coordinate directly with the property's concierge before arrival. They know the FBOs and can time the pickup to your landing.
