Why This Comparison Matters for Charter Clients
Cessna delivered 479 Citation Mustangs between 2006 and 2017 before discontinuing the model. Embraer has delivered over 600 Phenom 100s since 2008 and the aircraft remains in production as the Phenom 100EV. Both jets charter in the $1,400 to $2,000 per flight hour range, making them the most affordable jet options on the charter market. At that price parity, the decision hinges on what each airframe delivers for the money.
These are not niche aircraft. Together they account for a significant portion of the U.S. very light jet fleet. Every charter broker quoting a short-haul domestic trip will put at least one of them on the table. Understanding the practical differences saves time and avoids the wrong aircraft showing up at the FBO.
Cabin: 1.3 Extra Feet Changes Everything
The Phenom 100 cabin measures 11.0 feet long, 5.1 feet wide, and 4.9 feet high. The Mustang cabin measures 9.7 feet long, 4.6 feet wide, and 4.5 feet high. Those numbers look close on paper. In practice, the Phenom's cabin feels like a different category of aircraft.
That extra half-inch of width and four inches of height means passengers in the Phenom sit in proper club seating with enough shoulder room to work on a laptop without brushing elbows. The Mustang's four-seat cabin is more intimate. Two passengers fit comfortably. Three works. Four requires everyone to accept close quarters for the duration of the flight.
The Mustang was designed as a pilot's airplane that happens to carry passengers. The Phenom 100 was designed as a passenger cabin that happens to fly.
The Fifth and Sixth Seat
The Mustang is certified for one pilot plus four passengers (five total souls). The Phenom 100 is certified for one pilot plus six passengers (seven total souls), though most charter operators configure it for four passengers in club seating plus an optional belted lavatory seat. When booking for a group of five or six, the Phenom is the only option. This distinction alone drives the selection on roughly 30% of VLJ charter quotes.
Baggage and Lavatory Reality
The Phenom 100 offers 60 cubic feet of external baggage space. The Mustang provides 57 cubic feet. Both numbers are adequate for two to three passengers with standard luggage. Neither aircraft comfortably handles a full manifest plus golf bags or ski equipment. If your group needs to transport oversized gear, coordinate with the operator in advance.
The lavatory situation is perhaps the starkest difference between these two jets. The Phenom 100 has a fully enclosed aft lavatory with a proper privacy door. The Mustang has a potty-seat concealed behind a curtain. For flights under 90 minutes, neither arrangement matters. For a 2.5-hour flight with four passengers, the Phenom's enclosed facility makes a tangible difference in passenger comfort and dignity.
Speed and Range: Where 50 Knots Matters
The Phenom 100 cruises at 390 knots, 50 knots faster than the Mustang's 340-knot cruise speed. On a 500 nm leg (roughly New York to Charlotte), that speed difference translates to about 12 fewer minutes in the air. On a 1,000 nm leg (Teterboro to Miami), the Phenom arrives approximately 25 minutes ahead of the Mustang.
- Mustang: 1,150 nm range at long-range cruise. Covers New York to Miami, Chicago to Dallas, or LA to Seattle without a fuel stop.
- Phenom 100: 1,178 nm range at long-range cruise. Nearly identical to the Mustang on paper, but the higher cruise speed means less fuel consumed per mile at typical operational altitudes.
- Practical nonstop limit: Both aircraft realistically max out at about 2.5 to 3.0 hours of productive flight time. Beyond that, charter clients should step up to a light jet like the Citation CJ3 or Phenom 300.
Neither jet is designed for transcontinental missions. Both were engineered for short-haul, high-frequency flying: the two-hour hops between regional business centers that do not justify the expense of a larger aircraft.
Specification Comparison: Side by Side
The specification table reveals how close these two aircraft actually are. The Phenom wins on cabin volume, speed, and passenger capacity. The Mustang wins on takeoff distance, a practical advantage at shorter runways in the Northeast and mountain destinations. Everything else is essentially a draw.
