These are not niche aircraft. Together they account for a significant portion of the U.S. very light jet fleet. Every charter broker quoting a short-haul domestic trip will put at least one of them on the table. Understanding the practical differences saves time and avoids the wrong aircraft showing up at the FBO.

Cabin: 1.3 Extra Feet Changes Everything

The Phenom 100 cabin measures 11.0 feet long, 5.1 feet wide, and 4.9 feet high. The Mustang cabin measures 9.7 feet long, 4.6 feet wide, and 4.5 feet high. Those numbers look close on paper. In practice, the Phenom's cabin feels like a different category of aircraft.

That extra half-inch of width and four inches of height means passengers in the Phenom sit in proper club seating with enough shoulder room to work on a laptop without brushing elbows. The Mustang's four-seat cabin is more intimate. Two passengers fit comfortably. Three works. Four requires everyone to accept close quarters for the duration of the flight.

The Mustang was designed as a pilot's airplane that happens to carry passengers. The Phenom 100 was designed as a passenger cabin that happens to fly.

The Fifth and Sixth Seat

The Mustang is certified for one pilot plus four passengers (five total souls). The Phenom 100 is certified for one pilot plus six passengers (seven total souls), though most charter operators configure it for four passengers in club seating plus an optional belted lavatory seat. When booking for a group of five or six, the Phenom is the only option. This distinction alone drives the selection on roughly 30% of VLJ charter quotes.

Baggage and Lavatory Reality

The Phenom 100 offers 60 cubic feet of external baggage space. The Mustang provides 57 cubic feet. Both numbers are adequate for two to three passengers with standard luggage. Neither aircraft comfortably handles a full manifest plus golf bags or ski equipment. If your group needs to transport oversized gear, coordinate with the operator in advance.

The lavatory situation is perhaps the starkest difference between these two jets. The Phenom 100 has a fully enclosed aft lavatory with a proper privacy door. The Mustang has a potty-seat concealed behind a curtain. For flights under 90 minutes, neither arrangement matters. For a 2.5-hour flight with four passengers, the Phenom's enclosed facility makes a tangible difference in passenger comfort and dignity.

Speed and Range: Where 50 Knots Matters

The Phenom 100 cruises at 390 knots, 50 knots faster than the Mustang's 340-knot cruise speed. On a 500 nm leg (roughly New York to Charlotte), that speed difference translates to about 12 fewer minutes in the air. On a 1,000 nm leg (Teterboro to Miami), the Phenom arrives approximately 25 minutes ahead of the Mustang.

  • Mustang: 1,150 nm range at long-range cruise. Covers New York to Miami, Chicago to Dallas, or LA to Seattle without a fuel stop.
  • Phenom 100: 1,178 nm range at long-range cruise. Nearly identical to the Mustang on paper, but the higher cruise speed means less fuel consumed per mile at typical operational altitudes.
  • Practical nonstop limit: Both aircraft realistically max out at about 2.5 to 3.0 hours of productive flight time. Beyond that, charter clients should step up to a light jet like the Citation CJ3 or Phenom 300.

Neither jet is designed for transcontinental missions. Both were engineered for short-haul, high-frequency flying: the two-hour hops between regional business centers that do not justify the expense of a larger aircraft.

Where costs diverge is in availability and fleet age. The Mustang fleet is aging (the newest Mustangs were built in 2017) and shrinking. Charter operators are gradually retiring older airframes or converting them to owner-flown Part 91 aircraft. The Phenom 100 fleet is younger and still growing, which means more competition among operators and, in some markets, slightly more aggressive pricing.

On a busy route like New York to Nantucket (ACK) during summer, finding a Phenom 100 positioned nearby is statistically easier than finding a Mustang. That availability advantage can translate to lower positioning fees, which directly reduces total trip cost.

The Pilot Perspective and Single-Pilot Operations

Both aircraft are certified for single-pilot operations under Part 135. For charter clients, this means one pilot, not two, which reduces crew cost and simplifies scheduling. The practical implication is lower charter rates compared to light jets that require a two-pilot crew.

From the flight deck, pilots generally report that the Mustang is simpler to operate. It was designed specifically as an entry-level jet for owner-pilots transitioning from piston or turboprop aircraft. The Garmin G1000 avionics are intuitive, the systems are straightforward, and the aircraft has a reputation for benign handling characteristics. The Phenom 100 uses a Garmin-based Prodigy 100 flight deck that is functionally similar but adds some systems complexity. Embraer designed the Phenom as a scaled-down business jet, not a scaled-up piston airplane, and the cockpit reflects that philosophy.

For passengers, this distinction is invisible. Both jets are flown by type-rated professional pilots who have passed Part 135 checkrides. The pilot experience does not change the cabin experience.

The Verdict: When to Book Each

Choose the Phenom 100 when your party exceeds four passengers, when speed matters (time-sensitive connections, tight scheduling), or when you want the most spacious VLJ cabin available. The Phenom is the better all-around charter aircraft for most missions.

Choose the Citation Mustang when your party is two to three passengers, when operating into a short runway under 3,200 feet, or when the Mustang is better positioned (lower repositioning cost) for your departure airport. The Mustang is a capable, economical jet that does exactly what it was designed to do.

If your routing is over 2.5 hours or your passenger count exceeds six, neither jet is appropriate. Step up to a light jet. The Citation CJ4 at $2,400 to $3,300 per hour delivers meaningfully more cabin, range, and speed for trips that push beyond VLJ capability.
