The Four London Airports for Private Jets
Farnborough Airport (FAB) processed approximately 30,000 business aviation movements in 2025, making it the busiest dedicated business aviation airport in Europe. It is one of four airports serving London's private jet market, alongside Luton (LTN), Biggin Hill (BQH), and London City (LCY). Each occupies a different quadrant of the city and serves a different type of traveler. The choice between them depends on three variables: your final destination in the metro area, the time of your arrival, and the size of your aircraft.
London City (LCY) accepts private jets but imposes strict constraints: steep 5.5-degree approach certification required, noise restrictions limit operations to weekdays 6:30 AM to 9:30 PM, and Saturday 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Only aircraft certified for steep approaches (Falcon 900LX, Falcon 7X, Falcon 8X, Embraer Legacy 500) can operate there. The trade-off is location: LCY sits in Docklands, 7 miles from the City of London, with a 15-minute drive to Canary Wharf.
Farnborough: The European Business Aviation Capital
Farnborough Airport is a dedicated business aviation facility with no commercial airline traffic. TAG Aviation operates the primary FBO, offering two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2), heated hangars, crew rest facilities, and a passenger lounge that reflects the airport's positioning as the premium London gateway. The airport processes approximately 30,000 movements per year and hosts the biennial Farnborough International Airshow.
The 8,005-foot runway accepts all business jet types including ultra-long-range aircraft (G650ER, Global 7500) at maximum weight. Customs and immigration are handled on-site by UK Border Force officers stationed at the terminal. Processing takes 10-15 minutes for pre-cleared flights with advance passenger information filed through the General Aviation Report (GAR) system.
Ground Transfer from Farnborough
Farnborough sits 35 miles southwest of central London. Drive time to Mayfair: 50-75 minutes depending on traffic (M3 motorway to A316). Drive time to Heathrow area hotels: 25 minutes. Helicopter transfer from Farnborough to Battersea Heliport: 15 minutes, eliminating the M3/A316 traffic variable entirely. Helicopter services cost £2,500-£4,000 one way.
Luton: 24/7 Operations and Harrods Aviation
London Luton (LTN) is the only London airport offering unrestricted 24/7 operations for private jets. Arrivals at 3 AM, departures at 5 AM, no noise curfew. For transatlantic flights arriving late or departing early, Luton is the only option. Farnborough restricts movements to 7:00 AM-10:00 PM. Biggin Hill operates 7:30 AM-11:00 PM (later by prior arrangement).
Harrods Aviation operates the premier FBO at Luton, with a terminal designed to the standard its parent brand implies. The facility includes private suites, a Harrods-branded lounge, valet parking, and dedicated customs processing. Signature Flight Support operates a second FBO on the field. Luton also handles commercial airline traffic (easyJet, Wizz Air), which means private jet passengers share airspace and sometimes experience ATC delays that do not occur at dedicated GA airports.
Ground Transfer from Luton
Luton is 32 miles north of central London. Drive time to Mayfair: 45-70 minutes via M1 motorway. The M1 is prone to heavy congestion during weekday rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM). Off-peak, the drive drops to 40-45 minutes. Helicopter transfers from Luton to Battersea are available but less common than from Farnborough due to the controlled airspace routing required when flying south through the London terminal maneuvering area.
