Overview & Role
Palm Beach County Park Airport (KLNA), universally called Lantana, is a county-owned general aviation reliever airport about 6 nautical miles south of West Palm Beach and just 5 NM from Palm Beach International (PBI). Owned and operated by the Palm Beach County Department of Airports, it is one of South Florida's busiest light-GA fields, with heavy flight-training activity and a large mix of single-engine aircraft and helicopters. It exists primarily to keep small piston and training traffic off the congested PBI airspace.
Runway Capability
Lantana has three asphalt runways arranged in a triangle: 10/28 at 3,489 feet, 16/34 at 3,421 feet, and 4/22 at 3,256 feet. These lengths comfortably serve pistons, helicopters, and turboprops including King Air and TBM types. The field is best understood as a turboprop-and-piston airport; while a few very light jets can technically operate under ideal conditions, the runway lengths make it unsuitable for midsize or heavy business jets.
The Lifted Jet Ban
From 1973 until recently, a county noise-abatement ordinance prohibited pure turbojet aircraft and cargo aircraft over 12,500 pounds at Lantana. After a long legal battle initiated by a local pilot, the FAA found the ban violated federal airport grant assurances, and in December 2022 the County abandoned its appeal after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to hear it, ending the ban. Jets are no longer legally prohibited, but the short runways remain the real operational constraint.
Charter Considerations
For charter clients targeting the Lantana, Boynton Beach, and South Palm Beach area, the practical aircraft from KLNA are turboprops and select very light jets. Travelers needing midsize or larger cabin jets are typically served from Palm Beach International (PBI), 5 NM north, or Boca Raton (BCT), about 13 NM south, both of which have longer runways, full-service jet FBOs, and customs options. FBO & Ground Services
Stellar Aviation of South Palm Beach is the single FBO on the field, located at 2633 Lantana Road. It provides Jet A and 100LL fuel, hangars, tiedowns, ramp handling, and ground support, and the airport also hosts flight schools, maintenance shops, and a propeller shop. There are currently no landing fees at Lantana. Attended hours are typically 0800-1830; confirm after-hours fueling and handling in advance.
Safety & Planning
Lantana is uncontrolled; all traffic self-announces on CTAF 122.7, and the field can be busy with mixed training, helicopter, and transient traffic. The three intersecting runways provide excellent crosswind flexibility but demand careful pattern awareness. Field elevation near 14 feet MSL keeps density-altitude effects minimal. There are no customs facilities on site, so international itineraries must clear at a CBP-equipped airport such as PBI.
Seasonal & Regional Factors
South Florida's subtropical climate brings warm, humid conditions year-round and frequent afternoon convective thunderstorms during the May-October wet season, typically building between early afternoon and early evening. Morning departures generally offer the smoothest conditions. Florida's dense FBO network and year-round flying weather make the Palm Beach corridor one of the most active private aviation markets in the country, with PBI, Boca Raton, and North County (F45) all within a short repositioning hop.
