Airport Overview & History
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (ICAO: KFXE, FAA: FXE) is Broward County's dedicated private aviation airport and one of the busiest general aviation fields in the United States. Located 4 miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale, FXE handles approximately 195,000 flight operations annually, placing it among the top GA airports by volume nationwide. No scheduled commercial airline service operates here. For official FAA data, visit the FAA Airport Data portal or AirNav FXE.
The airport opened in the 1940s and has served the Broward County aviation community for over eight decades. The City of Fort Lauderdale owns and operates the facility. While Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) handles commercial traffic just 5 miles to the south, FXE is where the private aviation market lives. The airport's three FBOs, extensive maintenance infrastructure, and proximity to the Fort Lauderdale beach, yacht, and financial districts make it the natural choice for the area's high-net-worth traffic.
FXE holds a unique position in the South Florida aviation ecosystem. It sits between Opa-locka (OPF) to the south, serving Miami-Dade County, and Boca Raton (BCT) to the north. For clients visiting Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Wilton Manors, or the Intracoastal Waterway corridor, FXE is the closest private jet airport. The field is also a major base for flight training, aircraft maintenance, and avionics work.
Location & Address
Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is located at 6000 NW 21st Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33309. The airport sits at coordinates 26.1973° N, 80.1707° W, at an elevation of 13 feet above mean sea level.
Driving distances from FXE to key destinations: Fort Lauderdale Beach (7 miles, 15 min), Las Olas Boulevard (5 miles, 12 min), Port Everglades cruise terminal (8 miles, 15 min), Boca Raton (20 miles, 25 min), Hollywood (10 miles, 15 min), Aventura Mall (12 miles, 18 min). I-95 runs parallel to the airport, providing fast access north and south.
Ground transportation at FXE includes luxury car services, SUVs, and sprinters coordinated by each FBO. The airport's location in the heart of the Fort Lauderdale metro area means most destinations are within a 15-20 minute drive. For clients heading to the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show or yacht-related business at the marinas, FXE is the closest airport.
Runways & Facilities
Fort Lauderdale Executive operates two runways:
Runway 9/27 is the primary runway at 6,001 feet, running east-west. This runway handles all jet traffic and is equipped with ILS approach on Runway 9, RNAV (GPS) approaches, and full lighting. The 6,001-foot length accommodates light, midsize, and super-midsize jets without restriction. Heavy jets can operate with performance considerations depending on conditions and weight.
Runway 13/31 is the crosswind runway at 4,000 feet, used primarily for light piston, turboprop, and training traffic. This runway provides operational flexibility during northerly or southerly wind conditions.
The 6,001-foot primary runway is the main operational consideration at FXE. While adequate for the majority of private jet traffic, ultra-long-range heavy jets (G700, Global 7500 at high weights) may prefer airports with longer runways. Most operators of G650, Challenger 650, and Falcon 900 series aircraft operate at FXE routinely.

South Florida's climate provides year-round flying weather with seasonal patterns. Winter (November through April) is peak season with consistently VFR conditions, mild temperatures, and low humidity. This aligns with the highest charter demand period.
Summer brings daily afternoon thunderstorm activity, typically between 2-5 PM. These tropical convective systems can produce heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. Morning departures and late evening arrivals are preferred during summer months. Hurricane season (June through November) requires monitoring. FXE's 13-foot elevation means density altitude is never a performance concern.
