Why PBI, Not Boca or Fort Lauderdale
Palm Beach International Airport (KPBI) sits 3 miles west of downtown West Palm Beach and 6 miles from the island of Palm Beach. The airport handles approximately 12,000 business jet movements during the November-to-April season, making it the second-busiest private aviation airport in South Florida behind Opa-locka (KOPF). Fort Lauderdale Executive (KFXE) and Boca Raton (KBCT) offer alternatives, but PBI wins on proximity: 15 minutes to Worth Avenue, 20 minutes to the Breakers, 25 minutes to Jupiter Island.
Boca Raton Airport restricts operations after 11 PM and has a 6,276-foot runway that creates weight limitations for heavy jets on hot days. Fort Lauderdale Executive sits 45 minutes south of Palm Beach in traffic. PBI's two runways (10/28 at 10,008 feet and 14/32 at 6,914 feet) handle every aircraft in production, and the airport operates 24 hours with no noise curfew. For clients whose destination is Palm Beach County, PBI is the correct answer.
Three FBOs: Who Gets Your Aircraft
Atlantic Aviation (formerly Sheltair)
Atlantic Aviation operates the largest FBO facility at PBI with 185,000 square feet of hangar space and a 12,000-square-foot passenger terminal. The facility was rebranded from Sheltair in 2023 after Atlantic's acquisition. It sits on the north side of the field with direct taxiway access from Runway 10/28. Fuel pricing is competitive: Jet-A averages $6.80 to $7.40 per gallon during season, with volume discounts for operators purchasing over 500 gallons. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is available on-site for international arrivals.
Signature Flight Support
Signature operates PBI's second-largest FBO on the south side of the field. The facility features a recently renovated terminal with a dedicated customs area, conference rooms, crew rest suites, and a client lounge with runway views. Signature's national fuel contract pricing benefits operators who purchase fuel across the Signature network. Ramp fees are higher than Atlantic ($75 to $150 per night vs Atlantic's $50 to $100) but are waived with minimum fuel purchases of 100 gallons for light jets and 200 gallons for large cabin.
Jet Aviation
Jet Aviation (owned by General Dynamics, same parent as Gulfstream) operates the boutique option at PBI. Smaller facility. Fewer hangar positions. But the service model targets ultra-high-net-worth clients who prioritize discretion and personal attention over facility size. Jet Aviation handles fewer daily movements, which means faster turnaround times during peak season when Atlantic and Signature are managing 40-plus aircraft per day each.
The Seasonal Surge: November Through April
PBI's private jet traffic follows a pronounced seasonal pattern. During summer months (May through October), the airport averages 500 to 700 business jet movements per month. From November through April, that number doubles to 1,500 to 2,200 monthly movements. The peak occurs during the first two weeks of January and the two weeks surrounding the Palm Beach International Boat Show in late March.
Seasonal Pricing Impact
- Charter rates to PBI increase 15 to 25 percent during peak season versus summer pricing
- One-way charters from New York (Teterboro) to PBI: $18,000 to $24,000 on a light jet in January vs $14,000 to $18,000 in July
- Hangar availability disappears by late October. Operators storing aircraft at PBI for the season reserve hangar space 6 to 8 months in advance
- Ramp parking during boat show weekend reaches capacity. FBOs overflow to grass parking areas for light aircraft
- Ground transportation premiums: sedan service from PBI to Palm Beach Island runs $85 to $120 during season vs $60 to $80 in summer
The first week of January is PBI's Super Bowl. Every hangar is full. Every FBO ramp is stacked. Ground transportation queues extend beyond the terminal. If your arrival coincides with a major charity event on the island, add 30 minutes to every estimate.
