The FAA aircraft registry tracks 10,423 active civil helicopters with valid registrations in the United States as of March 2026. The same database lists 22,437 business jets. The jet fleet outnumbers the helicopter fleet by a ratio of 2.2 to 1. That ratio has remained stable for the past decade despite both fleets growing at roughly 2 to 3 percent annually. The stability suggests these are not competing markets. They are complementary ones.

Business jets solve long-distance, time-sensitive travel. Helicopters solve short-distance access problems: offshore platforms, hospital rooftops, traffic-congested city centers, remote construction sites, and helipads that jets cannot reach. A client chartering a Gulfstream G650 from New York to Miami may also charter a Sikorsky S-76 from Opa-locka to Palm Beach. Different vehicles, same trip, sequential missions.

Fleet Breakdown by Category

Single-engine turbine helicopters dominate the fleet. The Bell 206 series (JetRanger, LongRanger) and Airbus AS350/H125 account for over 3,200 registrations combined. These are the workhorses: EMS providers, law enforcement, news operations, and utility companies rely on them for daily missions. The twin-engine segment, led by the Airbus H145, Sikorsky S-76, and Leonardo AW139, serves the executive transport and offshore markets where dual-engine reliability is required.

The Executive Helicopter Segment

Approximately 1,100 helicopters in the U.S. fleet are configured for executive or VIP transport. This includes the Sikorsky S-76D ($16 million), Airbus H160 ($22 million), Leonardo AW139 ($14 million), and Airbus H155 ($10 million). These aircraft serve a narrow market: executives traveling between Manhattan helipads and Hamptons estates, Teterboro Airport transfers, and Wall Street commuters. The segment represents just 10 percent of the helicopter fleet but 35 percent of its economic value.

Where Helicopters Operate and Jets Cannot

The fundamental advantage of a helicopter is access. A Bell 429 lands on a rooftop in Midtown Manhattan. A hospital H145 lands in a parking lot adjacent to a rural trauma center. A Sikorsky S-92 lands on an oil platform 150 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. No jet performs these missions.

  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS): 980 helicopters dedicated to HEMS operations across 850+ bases. Air Methods, PHI, and Med-Trans operate the largest fleets. Average response radius: 150 miles.
  • Offshore Oil and Gas: 620 helicopters serve Gulf of Mexico platforms. Bristow Group and PHI dominate with S-92 and AW139 fleets. Round-trip distances: 200 to 400 miles.
  • Law Enforcement: 415 helicopters operated by municipal and state agencies. LAPD, NYPD, Texas DPS, and Florida Highway Patrol maintain the largest fleets.

The traditional helicopter fleet grows at 2 to 3 percent annually, driven primarily by EMS fleet replacement cycles and offshore sector recovery after the 2020 oil price collapse. New deliveries average 350 to 400 helicopters per year in the U.S. market. Retirement rates run slightly lower, producing modest net fleet growth.

eVTOL and Its Non-Impact So Far

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have attracted over $10 billion in investment since 2020. Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, and Lilium have all announced certification timelines between 2025 and 2028. As of May 2026, zero eVTOL aircraft have entered commercial revenue service in the United States. The FAA has not issued a type certificate for any eVTOL aircraft.

The practical limitations are straightforward. Battery energy density limits range to 60 to 100 miles. Payload capacity restricts most designs to 4 passengers. Charging infrastructure does not exist at scale. The total addressable market for a 60-mile, 4-passenger electric aircraft overlaps with a narrow segment of the helicopter market: urban transfers and airport shuttles in congested metro areas. EMS, offshore, utility, and executive transport remain helicopter missions for the foreseeable future.

Business Jet Fleet Growth Comparison

The business jet fleet grows at 3 to 4 percent annually, outpacing helicopters. Net new jet deliveries (700+ per year globally, approximately 400 in the U.S.) exceed retirements by a wider margin than in the helicopter segment. The jet fleet's faster growth reflects expanding charter demand, favorable depreciation policy (Section 168 bonus depreciation), and new model introductions from Gulfstream, Dassault, and Embraer that accelerate fleet replacement cycles.

Cost Comparison: Operating a Helicopter vs a Business Jet

Helicopters cost more per mile than jets. Significantly more. An S-76D burns 105 gallons per hour while traveling at 155 knots. A CJ3+ burns 130 gallons per hour at 415 knots. The jet covers 2.7 times more distance per gallon of fuel. Maintenance costs are higher per flight hour because helicopter rotor systems, gearboxes, and vibration-prone components require more frequent inspection intervals than fixed-wing structures.

The cost premium exists because helicopters deliver access that jets cannot. No amount of jet speed solves the last-mile problem when the destination has no runway. The S-76D's $5,000 per hour rate pays for a 10-minute flight that eliminates a 90-minute drive. The math works when the passenger's time is worth more than the fuel.
