Atlanta: The Southeast's Private Aviation Capital
Atlanta is the business capital of the Southeast, headquarters to 16 Fortune 500 companies (Coca-Cola, Delta, Home Depot, UPS, Southern Company), and a logistics hub that generates consistent private aviation demand. DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK) ranks as the third-busiest general aviation airport in the United States, handling over 160,000 annual operations. The Atlanta metro area offers four GA airports that serve distinct geographic corridors.
Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL), the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic, accepts private jet traffic through Atlantic Aviation but airline congestion, taxi delays, and high fees make it a poor choice for GA operations. PDK and Fulton County-Brown Field (FTY) handle the vast majority of Atlanta private jet traffic.
Airport Comparison
DeKalb-Peachtree (PDK) is Atlanta's premier private jet airport, located 9 miles northeast of downtown in the heart of Buckhead's corporate corridor. PDK puts passengers in Buckhead (Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Coca-Cola headquarters) in 15 minutes. Three FBOs compete for business: Atlantic Aviation, Signature Flight Support, and Epps Aviation (the airport's oldest FBO, known for personal service). PDK's 6,001-foot runway handles most business jets, though heavy jets at max gross weight should verify performance.
Fulton County-Brown Field (FTY) serves west Atlanta and is closest to the Georgia World Congress Center, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and downtown's convention district. FTY is 15-20 minutes from downtown, making it ideal for events at the Omni Hotel complex and State Farm Arena. The 5,796-foot runway accommodates midsize and super-midsize jets with standard payload.
Cobb County-McCollum Field (RYY) provides the longest runway in the Atlanta GA network at 6,311 feet, serving the north-northwest metro corridor: Marietta, Kennesaw, and the Braves' Truist Park area. Gwinnett County-Briscoe Field (LZU) handles light jet traffic for the northeast suburbs: Lawrenceville, Suwanee, and the I-85 corridor toward Greenville.
FBO Options and Services
PDK's three FBOs create a competitive market that benefits operators. Atlantic Aviation and Signature Flight Support provide full-service operations with modern terminals, pilot lounges, conference rooms, GPU, PCA, and hangar storage. Epps Aviation, the airport's oldest FBO (founded 1940), offers a personal-service model with competitive fuel pricing and a loyal customer base. Fuel prices at PDK average 15-25 cents per gallon below Hartsfield-Jackson's GA facility due to the three-way competition dynamic.
Fulton County-Brown Field operates a single FBO (Fulton County Executive Aviation) with full services including fuel, GPU, overnight parking, and crew facilities. The single-FBO model means less price competition but also streamlined operations: ground handling is consistent and familiar for repeat operators. For clients arriving from Mexico or the Caribbean, PDK does not have CBP facilities; international arrivals must clear customs at Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) or another port of entry before repositioning to PDK or FTY.
