Airport Overview & History
Phoenix Goodyear Airport (KGYR/GYR) sits in Goodyear, Arizona, about 20 miles west of downtown Phoenix in the West Valley. It opened in 1941 as a World War II naval air facility (NAF Litchfield Park, later NAS Litchfield Park) and after the war became a primary storage and preservation site for surplus military aircraft. Today the City of Phoenix owns and operates it as a general aviation reliever, and it remains one of the largest aircraft storage and maintenance fields in the world, where retired and temporarily parked commercial airliners are kept in the dry desert climate.
