Overview & Role
North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT) sits about 3 miles northwest of downtown Las Vegas and serves as the metro area's dedicated general aviation reliever for Harry Reid International (LAS). Owned and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation, it is among the busiest GA airports in the country — roughly 228,000 operations in 2024 — driven by flight training, business aviation, and the largest concentration of helicopter air-tour traffic in the region.
Runway Capability
VGT's longest runway is 7/25 at 5,005 feet, with parallels 12R/30L (5,001 ft) and 12L/30R (4,203 ft), all asphalt and 75 feet wide. That capacity supports light jets routinely (Phenom 300, Citation CJ-series, Citation XLS) and many midsize jets after a performance review. At 2,205 feet field elevation, summer density altitude reduces available payload and runway margin, so heavy and long-range jets typically operate from LAS instead.
FBO & Ground Handling
Unlike LAS — where Signature and Atlantic Aviation operate — VGT has a single FBO operated by the airport itself, a member of the Air Elite network. It provides Jet-A and 100LL, NATA Safety 1st line service, hangar and ramp parking, GPU, lavatory and oxygen service, rental cars, and arranged catering. Fuel is generally priced below LAS, a key reason transient operators choose VGT for cost-sensitive trips.
Charter Considerations
VGT is the practical choice for light and midsize charter into Las Vegas when avoiding LAS airline congestion and ramp fees. Demand spikes sharply around major events — CES (January), Super Bowl, the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix (November), and National Finals Rodeo (December) — when LAS ramp space fills and overflow shifts here. Book 7–14 days ahead for these windows; last-minute lift during peak events can run materially higher.
Safety & Planning
With RNAV (GPS) and visual approaches only and no ILS, low-ceiling days require careful alternate planning; LAS and Henderson Executive (HND) are the usual options. The very high volume of training and tour traffic makes VGT a busy, see-and-avoid environment — crews should expect an active pattern and brief carefully. Density altitude performance checks are essential on hot afternoons.
Customs & Hours
VGT operates 24/7 but has no on-field U.S. Customs. International arrivals must clear CBP at Harry Reid International (LAS), roughly 8 NM south, before repositioning to VGT. Domestic operations have no slot or PPR requirement, though crews should confirm parking during peak event weeks.
Regional Context
The Las Vegas valley offers three GA options: VGT (the high-volume reliever near downtown), Henderson Executive (HND) on the southeast side about 15 NM away, and LAS for heavy jets and international clearance. For light-to-midsize charter close to downtown and the north valley, VGT is typically the fastest and most economical gateway; HND is often preferred for the Strip's south end and for operators wanting a quieter ramp.
