Airport Overview & History
Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (KDVT/DVT) is a City of Phoenix-owned reliever field in north Phoenix. It is routinely the busiest general aviation airport in the United States — and by some movement counts the busiest in the world — recording well over 400,000 takeoffs and landings a year, with figures approaching 500,000 in recent peak years. Roughly 99% of that traffic is general aviation, dominated by flight schools, making DVT one of the premier training environments in the country alongside fields like North Las Vegas (VGT).
Runway Capability
DVT's two closely spaced parallel asphalt runways measure 8,208 feet and 4,500 feet. The long runway accommodates the full range of business jets — light, midsize, super-midsize and many heavy jets — under typical conditions. Operators must still run real-world performance numbers: at 1,478 ft field elevation, summer temperatures above 110°F push density altitude high enough to meaningfully extend takeoff distances and reduce climb performance.
Charter Considerations
Cutter Aviation is the only full-service jet FBO at Deer Valley and the practical base for charter departures, with Jet-A, hangar and ramp space, and maintenance on site. Because DVT's traffic is overwhelmingly training-oriented, jet crews share the pattern with a constant flow of light aircraft; advisory and dispatch planning should account for sequencing delays at peak daytime hours. The Jet Finder sources FAA Part 135 aircraft positioned in the Phoenix area for on-demand charter from KDVT.
Safety & Planning
Approaches at DVT are GPS-based (RNAV to 07R and 25L, plus an RNAV-B); there is no ILS, so weather alternates matter when ceilings drop. The tower works 118.4 from 0600 to midnight; outside those hours the field reverts to a non-towered, CTAF-advisory environment. The dual parallel runways give crosswind flexibility, but the dense training traffic and converging patterns demand a high level of situational awareness for jet operations.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
Arizona's dry, clear air delivers excellent VFR conditions for most of the year, but two seasonal factors drive planning. First, summer heat creates serious density-altitude penalties — early-morning departures (before 10:00 local) maximize performance and avoid the worst convective buildups. Second, the North American monsoon (roughly July through September) brings rapidly developing afternoon thunderstorms, blowing dust and microbursts, frequently between 14:00 and 18:00 local. The cooler months offer the most reliable jet operations.
Regional Context
DVT has no on-field U.S. Customs; international and CBP-cleared arrivals into the Valley use Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). For private flyers, Scottsdale Airport (SDL), about 9 nautical miles east, is the area's other premier business-jet field and a common alternative for those wanting a less training-saturated ramp. Deer Valley's appeal is its long runway, full Cutter FBO, and quick access to north Phoenix, Anthem and the I-17 corridor without the congestion of a commercial terminal.
