Airport Overview
Chandler Municipal Airport (KCHD/CHD) is a public-use general aviation reliever owned by the City of Chandler, sited in the southeast Phoenix metropolitan area roughly 6 miles from downtown Chandler and about 20 miles from downtown Phoenix. It is one of the busiest GA training and recreational fields in Arizona, with a large based-aircraft population dominated by piston singles, experimentals, helicopters, and a handful of turboprops and light jets.
Runway Capability
The two parallel asphalt runways top out at 4,870 feet (4R/22L) and 4,401 feet (4L/22R). This length comfortably supports turboprops such as the King Air and TBM, and the lighter end of the jet market, but it does not provide the margin most business jets require, especially in Arizona heat.
Charter Considerations
For charter into the Chandler area, very light and light jets such as the Phenom 100, HondaJet, and Citation M2 can operate from KCHD on cooler days with conservative loads, but performance must be verified for the actual density altitude. Midsize, super-midsize, and heavy jets cannot reliably use this runway; those flights are better served by Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (KIWA), Scottsdale (KSDL), or Phoenix Sky Harbor (KPHX). Density altitude is the defining operational factor here. With a 1,243-foot field elevation and summer temperatures frequently exceeding 110°F, density altitude can climb well above 4,000 feet, eroding the already limited runway margin. Light-jet and turboprop crews should compute takeoff and landing distances for the day's conditions and consider weight or fuel restrictions on hot afternoons.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
Arizona's North American Monsoon (roughly July through September) brings afternoon convective buildups, blowing dust, and gusty outflow winds that can disrupt midday and evening departures. Morning operations are typically the smoothest and coolest, offering the best performance margins. The control tower staffs 0600-2100 local; outside those hours the field is non-towered and IFR traffic coordinates with Phoenix Approach.
Regional Context
KCHD sits within one of the nation's densest clusters of GA airports. Stellar Airpark (KP19) lies a few miles west, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (KIWA) about 8 NM east handles airline and large-jet traffic, and Scottsdale (KSDL) and Phoenix Sky Harbor (KPHX) round out the Valley's business-aviation options. There is no U.S. Customs at Chandler, so international arrivals must clear at a designated port of entry such as Sky Harbor or Mesa Gateway.
