Overview & Regional Role
McClellan-Palomar Airport sits about 3 miles south of Carlsbad and is the busiest general aviation airport in San Diego County — and one of the busiest single-runway airports in California, logging roughly 171,000 operations in 2024 with about 300 based aircraft. Owned and operated by San Diego County, it primarily serves business aviation, charter, and flight training for the North County biotech, golf-resort, and tech cluster. Scheduled commercial service (United Express) is returning in March 2026 with E175s to Denver and San Francisco, but the field remains GA-dominant.
Runway Capability
The lone runway, 6/24 at 4,897 x 150 ft of grooved asphalt, is the defining operational constraint. Light and midsize jets operate routinely; super-midsize and heavy aircraft need a careful runway analysis and may be weight-restricted, particularly in warm afternoon temperatures. The ILS Runway 24 supports IFR arrivals, with RNAV (GPS) and VOR backups. An approved master-plan extension beyond 5,000 ft has not yet been constructed.
Customs & International Arrivals
Unlike most relievers its size, KCRQ is a designated user-fee CBP airport. U.S. Customs and Border Protection clears international general-aviation arrivals daily, with standard service 9am-5pm and 24-hour service available by prior arrangement; user fees run roughly $50-$500 by aircraft size. This makes Carlsbad a viable direct entry point from Mexico or Canada without diverting to San Diego International (SAN) — a meaningful advantage for charter clients headed to North County.
Curfew, Tower Hours & Noise
KCRQ enforces a voluntary nighttime curfew: jets are asked to avoid operations 2200-0700 local and propeller aircraft 0000-0600, with exceptions for emergency, lifeguard, and law-enforcement flights. The control tower is part-time, staffed 0700-2200 local; outside those hours the field reverts to CTAF (118.6) self-announce procedures. Charter flights planning late-night arrivals or departures should confirm curfew and tower status during scheduling.
Charter Considerations & Timing
Demand peaks around golf and resort seasons, LEGOLAND/Carlsbad-area family travel, and biotech corporate calendars. Booking 7-14 days ahead of peak windows secures better aircraft selection; the curfew and part-time tower argue for daytime scheduling. Morning departures generally beat the coastal marine layer ("June Gloom"), which can push ceilings to MVFR/IFR in late spring and early summer mornings before burning off.
Regional Context & Alternates
KCRQ is well positioned among San Diego-area fields. San Diego International (KSAN) offers full CBP and longer runways but heavy commercial congestion; Montgomery-Gillespie (KMYF, KSEE) and Oceanside (KOKB) provide nearby GA options. For larger-cabin aircraft that exceed Carlsbad's runway comfort, KSAN or John Wayne (KSNA) to the north are the practical alternates. The Jet Finder factors runway performance, curfew timing, and customs needs into routing recommendations for KCRQ.
