An aircraft with an active registration and valid airworthiness certificate is 'still registered,' which is different from 'still flying.' To determine which vintage jets actually operate, we cross-referenced registration dates, annual inspection compliance, and N-number activity against publicly available ADS-B data.

The result: approximately 120 business jets manufactured before 1980 maintain active FAA registrations. Of those, roughly 40-50 show evidence of flight activity (ADS-B hits, fuel purchases, or maintenance entries) within the past 12 months. The rest sit in various states of preservation, awaiting restoration, or functioning as static displays and parts sources.

The Survivors: Business Jets From the 1960s and 1970s

The earliest business jet models in the FAA registry with active airworthiness certificates are Learjet 23s and 24s from the mid-1960s. Bill Lear's original Learjet 23 entered service in 1964, and the improved Learjet 24 followed in 1966. Both jets carried 6-8 passengers at speeds that embarrassed the propeller-driven aircraft of the era.

The Learjet 35A is the workhorse of the vintage fleet. With 186 active registrations, it remains the most common pre-1985 business jet in the U.S. registry. Many Learjet 35As still operate commercially under Part 135 certificates, primarily as air ambulances and cargo carriers. Corrosion

Business jets stored in humid coastal environments (Florida, the Gulf Coast, the Southeast) develop corrosion in wing structures, pressure vessel seams, and landing gear attach points. An annual inspection that discovers significant corrosion can generate a repair bill of $200,000-$500,000 on a jet worth $300,000. At that point, the math ends the conversation. The jet becomes a parts donor.

Parts Scarcity

Manufacturers stop producing spare parts for discontinued models. Garrett TFE731 engines (used in Learjet 35s, Falcon 20s, Sabreliner 65s) remain well-supported because the engine family stayed in production for decades.
