Airport Overview & History
Ryan Airfield (KRYN/RYN) is a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport about 12 miles southwest of downtown Tucson, Arizona, operated by the Tucson Airport Authority. The field traces its origins to 1942, when the Ryan School of Aeronautics opened here to train Army Air Forces pilots away from the vulnerable coast; roughly 6,000 pilots trained before the school closed in 1944. Today it spans more than 1,800 acres and hosts more than a dozen tenants, with a heavy mix of flight training, law-enforcement and military helicopter activity, and general aviation.
Runway Capability
RYN's primary runway, 6R/24L, is 5,508 feet of asphalt; a parallel runway, 6L/24R, adds 4,800 feet, and a crosswind runway provides additional wind flexibility. Only Runway 6R is served by an instrument approach (ILS and RNAV/GPS). At 2,417 ft MSL, the field reliably supports turboprops and light jets. Midsize jets are feasible with performance planning, but operators of super-midsize and heavy aircraft typically prefer Tucson International (KTUS).
FBO & Ground Services
Velocity Air is the on-field FBO. It provides 100LL and Jet-A — attended during posted hours and via 24-hour self-serve credit-card 100LL — along with transient parking, tiedowns, hangar space, aircraft maintenance, ground power, and a pilots lounge with crew amenities. For after-hours arrivals or larger aircraft handling, coordinate with the FBO in advance.
Tower & Airspace
RYN is a towered airport staffed under the FAA Contract Tower Program, generally from early morning to about 8 p.m. local. The tower frequency is 125.8 (with 120.35 also in use) and ground is 118.2; when the tower is closed, the field reverts to CTAF on 125.8. Pilots should monitor ATIS for which runway pairs the tower is controlling, and expect significant training and helicopter traffic in the pattern.
Charter Considerations
As a reliever close to Tucson, RYN is a convenient origin for light-jet and turboprop charter, sparing passengers the congestion of the commercial terminal. One-way charters carry a repositioning (empty-leg) cost; round trips from RYN avoid it. Because there is no Customs on field, international itineraries must clear at a port-of-entry airport such as Tucson International (KTUS) first.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
Ryan Airfield sits in the Sonoran Desert, with very hot summers (frequently over 100°F) and a July–September monsoon that brings rapidly building afternoon thunderstorms and gusty winds. Density altitude is the chief planning factor: on hot afternoons, performance on the 5,508-foot main runway degrades noticeably, so early-morning departures maximize payload and runway margin. Winters are mild and offer some of the clearest VFR flying in the country.

RYN is one of several Tucson-area airfields. It functions as the metro general aviation reliever, while Tucson International (KTUS), about 12 nautical miles east, is the air-carrier and Customs gateway with an 11,000-foot runway for heavy jets. Davis-Monthan AFB lies nearby. For most light-jet and turboprop trips into Tucson, RYN offers quicker, quieter access; larger-cabin or international flights are better matched to KTUS.
