Airport Overview
Mobile Regional Airport (KMOB) is the principal aviation gateway for the Mobile, Alabama metro and the central Gulf Coast, owned by the Mobile Airport Authority and located roughly 12 miles west of downtown. Historically Mobile's commercial passenger hub, MOB retains airline service while the Authority builds out the new Mobile International Airport at Brookley (BFM); for business aviation, MOB remains a fully capable, towered field with customs and a long primary runway.
Runway Capability
The 8,502-foot primary runway 15/33 places no practical limit on civil business jets. Light, midsize, super-midsize, and heavy aircraft — including ultra-long-range types like the Gulfstream G700 and Global 7500 — operate here under standard conditions. The 4,376-foot crosswind runway 18/36 serves light and turboprop traffic and is generally closed overnight. There are no published weight, slot, or noise restrictions for civil operations.
FBO & Ground Services
Signature Aviation is the on-field FBO, providing Jet-A and 100LL fueling, hangar and ramp space, light maintenance, crew cars, rental cars, and concierge-level passenger handling. As the sole full-service FBO, pre-arrival coordination for fuel, hangar, or large-cabin handling is recommended, particularly during regional events and Mardi Gras season.
Customs & International
KMOB is a U.S. Customs landing-rights airport, so Customs and Border Protection clearance can be arranged for international general-aviation arrivals with advance notice and eAPIS filing. The Jet Finder coordinates customs scheduling, manifest filing, and CBP timing for cross-border charter into Mobile.
Safety & Planning
MOB is towered (118.3) from 0600 to 2300 local and offers ILS, RNAV (GPS), and VOR approaches, supporting reliable instrument arrivals in low-visibility conditions. The field's 219-foot elevation keeps density-altitude effects modest year-round. The main operational variable is summer convection — afternoon thunderstorms build quickly between roughly 2 and 6 p.m. local — so morning departures generally offer the smoothest conditions.
Regional Context
Mobile Regional anchors a cluster of Gulf Coast fields including Mobile Downtown/Brookley (BFM, ~10 NM), St. Elmo (2R5), and H.L. Sonny Callahan in Fairhope (CQF, ~23 NM). For travelers heading to the Eastern Shore, Gulf Shores, or the Mississippi coast, MOB's long runway and customs make it the preferred business-aviation entry point, with shorter relievers available for light aircraft and alternate planning.
