Airport Overview
Martha's Vineyard Airport (KMVY) is the largest of the island's three airfields and the only one served by scheduled airlines. Owned by Dukes County and operated by the Martha's Vineyard Airport Commission, it sits inland near the center of the island, roughly four miles from Vineyard Haven and about eight miles from Edgartown. For private travelers, MVY delivers direct ramp access and the short ground transfers that define island travel by air.
Runway Capability
The 5,504-ft main runway (6/24) handles the full spectrum of business jets up through most super-midsize types, with an ILS to Runway 24 backing up RNAV (GPS) approaches. The 3,297-ft crosswind runway (15/33) adds wind flexibility for light aircraft. Operators of larger-cabin jets should run performance numbers, but the vast majority of charter missions to the Vineyard are well within MVY's capability.
Charter Considerations
MVY is a marquee summer destination, and lift is busiest — and priciest — from late June through Labor Day. A light jet from the New York area typically runs in the $6,000–$9,000 range, with peak-weekend premiums. Because few jets are based on the island, most aircraft are repositioned in; The Jet Finder sources from the nearest Part 135 operators to balance positioning cost against aircraft quality.
Safety & Planning
Summer fog is the defining operational hazard at MVY, forming when warm air moves over the cold Atlantic. The ILS to Runway 24 is critical for these conditions, and IFR planning is standard for charter operations year-round. Winter brings nor'easters and the occasional de-icing requirement. Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) generally offer the cleanest flying weather.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
During the July 4th week, the first half of August, and Labor Day weekend, the MVY ramp can fill completely. Advance parking coordination with the airport FBO is essential during these windows, and short-turn or drop-and-go arrangements are common when overnight ramp space is unavailable. Presidential and high-profile visitor movements have historically caused additional traffic and temporary flight restrictions.
Customs & Regional Context
MVY has no on-site U.S. Customs; international arrivals must clear CBP at a gateway such as Boston Logan (BOS), Providence (PVD), or another port of entry before continuing to the island. Within the region, Nantucket (ACK) is the comparable island airport about 25 NM east, while Hyannis (HYA) and New Bedford (EWB) serve as mainland alternates for fuel, customs routing, or alternate planning.
