Overview & National Park Setting
Jackson Hole Airport (KJAC/JAC) is unique in U.S. aviation: it is the only commercial-service airport located entirely within a national park, sitting on land inside Grand Teton National Park, about 7 miles north of the town of Jackson, Wyoming. Operated by the Jackson Hole Airport Board, it serves Jackson Hole's ski resorts, Yellowstone and Grand Teton tourism, and a substantial private-aviation community. Its park location drives an unusually strict regulatory environment around noise and aircraft type.
Runway Capability
The airport has one runway, 01/19, at 6,300 x 150 ft of grooved asphalt. RWY 19 carries dual ILS/LOC approaches plus RNAV (GPS); the field also has VOR and visual procedures. The high 6,451 ft elevation means density-altitude performance, not raw length, usually defines what an aircraft can carry out of Jackson Hole on a warm day. Operators should run takeoff performance numbers against forecast temperature and weight rather than relying on runway length alone.
Noise & Aircraft Restrictions
Because the airport lies inside Grand Teton, operations are limited to Stage III aircraft; Stage 2 jets have been prohibited since June 28, 2004. There is also a single-event approach noise ceiling of 92 dBA. These are firm, enforceable constraints, and charter clients should confirm their aircraft's noise certification before booking a flight into or out of KJAC.
Curfew & Seasonal Constraints
A voluntary general-aviation noise curfew runs roughly 2130 to 0700 local (expanded by the Airport Board in 2022 for GA traffic) to limit nighttime noise over the park and surrounding communities. While not federally enforceable, non-compliance draws steep after-hours handling fees. Ramp space is tight during the winter ski surge and summer park season, and PPR is required for overnight parking. Book ground handling and parking well in advance during peak periods.
Charter Considerations
All ground handling runs through a single FBO, Jackson Hole Flight Services, which simplifies coordination but means availability can compress during peak weeks. KJAC has no on-field U.S. Customs, so international itineraries must clear at another port of entry. Within about 150 NM, alternates and repositioning options include Driggs/Reed Memorial (KDIJ), Idaho Falls (KIDA), and Rexburg (KRXE). When Jackson Hole weather, curfew, or parking constraints bind, these fields offer flexibility, with Idaho Falls in particular providing a lower-elevation, less-restricted option for tech stops or crew positioning.
