Airport Overview
Gillespie Field (KSEE/SEE) is a busy general aviation airport owned and operated by the County of San Diego, located in El Cajon roughly 11 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. It opened during World War II as a Marine Corps parachute training base and today is one of the region's primary GA reliever airports, handling over 100,000 annual operations across three runways. For East County and inland San Diego trips, it offers far quicker private access than San Diego International (KSAN).
Runway Capability
The primary runway, 9L/27R, is 5,342 feet of asphalt and is served by an RNAV (GPS) approach. Runway 17/35 adds 4,145 feet with its own RNAV (GPS) procedure, and a LOC-DME approach is published; the short 9R/27L (2,738 feet) is unlit and closed sunset to sunrise. At 388 feet MSL, density altitude is rarely a limiting factor. The field reliably handles light jets and many midsize jets; super-midsize and heavy aircraft are generally impractical given runway length and weight limits.
FBOs & Ground Services
Gillespie Field is served by multiple full-service FBOs. Circle Air Group (formerly Jet Air) operates a private terminal with concierge service and a large Part 145 repair and avionics shop specializing in Citation, Gulfstream, and Falcon aircraft. High Performance Aircraft and Golden State Aviation round out fueling, ground handling, hangar, and tiedown options. Jet-A and 100LL are available on field. Pre-arrival coordination is recommended for hangar space and after-hours handling.
Charter Considerations
Gillespie Field is well suited to light and midsize jet charter serving El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, and inland East County, as well as downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, and Coronado within roughly a 20-minute drive. Because the field tops out at midsize jets, larger-cabin missions are typically routed through Montgomery-Gibbs (KMYF) or Carlsbad/McClellan-Palomar (KCRQ). The Jet Finder sources FAA Part 135 aircraft positioned near KSEE and checks empty-leg opportunities to reduce one-way repositioning costs.
Customs & International
Gillespie Field does not have on-field U.S. Customs and Border Protection clearance, so international arrivals must clear at a designated port of entry. For trans-border flights, San Diego International (KSAN) and Brown Field (KSDM) near the Mexican border offer CBP services. The Jet Finder can plan routing and a customs stop for international itineraries originating or terminating in the El Cajon area.
Noise & Operational Factors
The airport operates a Voluntary Noise Abatement Program developed with the surrounding community. Touch-and-go and jet departures are strongly discouraged between 2200 and 0700, and Runway 17 is the preferred departure when the tower is closed. There is no formal curfew or weight cap, as federal grant assurances prevent the County from restricting access. The control tower operates daily 0700-2100 local (120.7); outside those hours, standard CTAF procedures apply.
Regional Context
Gillespie Field anchors a dense San Diego GA network. Montgomery-Gibbs Executive (KMYF) is about 8 NM west with longer runways, MCAS Miramar (KNKX) is 9 NM, San Diego International (KSAN) is 12 NM, and Ramona (KRNM) sits 13 NM north. For super-midsize and heavy-jet missions that exceed Gillespie's runway, KMYF and Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar (KCRQ) are the usual alternates, while KSEE remains the most convenient field for inland East County travelers.
