Airport Overview & Identity
Dutchess County Airport (KPOU/POU) is a county-owned public-use field about 4 miles south of downtown Poughkeepsie in the Town of Wappinger, NY. It is now officially branded Hudson Valley Regional Airport, though KPOU/POU remain the FAA and ICAO identifiers. The field serves Dutchess County's corporate, leisure, and flight-training traffic with roughly 40,000 annual operations and direct ramp access that avoids the congestion of the New York metro relievers.
Runway Capability
The primary runway 06/24 runs about 4,998 feet of asphalt with an ILS approach to Runway 06, making KPOU a practical light-jet and turboprop destination. The 3,806-foot crosswind runway 15/33 adds wind flexibility but has displaced thresholds that cut into usable length. Light jets like the CJ series, Phenom, and HondaJet operate routinely; midsize jets require runway-analysis review for weight and temperature, and large-cabin aircraft are better matched to longer regional fields.
FBO & Ground Services
FlightLevel Dutchess is the single FBO on the field, located at 263 New Hackensack Road. It provides full-service Jet-A and 100LL, ground power, engine pre-heat, hangar storage, and concierge services such as limo and hotel arrangements. The facility also runs an on-site maintenance department and is an authorized Cirrus Service Center. Richmor Aviation, the airport's longtime operator, departed in 2013.
Charter Considerations
KPOU is a strong choice for Hudson Valley trips, putting passengers minutes from Poughkeepsie, the Culinary Institute of America, Vassar College, and the wider mid-Hudson region without routing through Westchester or Teterboro traffic. Because it is a smaller field with a single FBO, booking 7 to 14 days ahead for peak periods such as graduation weekends, fall foliage season, and holidays secures better aircraft availability and pricing.
Safety & Planning
The ILS to Runway 06 provides reliable IFR access, but it is unmonitored when the control tower is closed. The tower operates 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. local; outside those hours the field reverts to CTAF procedures. Noise abatement follows NBAA turbojet procedures: intersection departures are not authorized for turbojet and large aircraft, Runway 24 is prioritized in light winds, and reverse thrust should be minimized. There is a voluntary quiet period from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
At 165 feet elevation, density altitude is rarely a limiting factor at KPOU even on warm summer days. The Hudson Valley sees frontal passages and occasional IFR ceilings in winter, with afternoon convective activity in summer; morning departures generally encounter the most stable conditions. The two-runway layout provides good crosswind flexibility year-round. Winter operations may involve de-icing, which FlightLevel can coordinate.
Regional Context
KPOU complements the New York region's busier executive fields. For travelers needing a longer runway, U.S. Customs, or heavy-jet handling, nearby New York Stewart International (KSWF, about 12 NM) and Westchester County (KHPN) offer those capabilities. KPOU itself has no on-field customs, so international arrivals must clear at a designated port of entry. For Hudson Valley point-to-point trips, however, KPOU's proximity to Poughkeepsie and minimal ground delays make it the most efficient option.
