Double Eagle II Airport (KAEG/AEG) is a public, City of Albuquerque-owned general aviation reliever located about 7 miles northwest of downtown Albuquerque on the West Mesa. It opened in 1983 with a single runway, 4/22, and added the 17/35 crosswind runway a few years later. A control tower was commissioned in the mid-2000s, reusing a cab relocated from the Albuquerque International Sunport. Today KAEG carries the bulk of the metro's training, corporate, and general aviation traffic, keeping it clear of the airline operations at the Sunport (KABQ), roughly 11 NM to the southeast.
