Airport Overview & History
Bowman Field is one of the oldest continuously operating airfields in the United States, in service since 1919, and today functions as Louisville's close-in general aviation reliever to nearby Louisville Muhammad Ali International (KSDF), about 5 miles southwest. Owned and operated by the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, it sits roughly 5 miles east of downtown Louisville, giving private travelers fast ground access to the city, the medical district, and the East End.
Runway Capability
The field offers two asphalt runways: 6/24 at 4,356 feet (the primary, grooved) and 15/33 at 3,587 feet. This is solid light-jet and turboprop territory: Citation CJs, the Phenom 100 and 300, HondaJet, and King Airs operate routinely here. Larger midsize jets can be accommodated but demand a careful performance review for weight and temperature, and many heavy aircraft will prefer KSDF's longer runways.
Charter Considerations
Louisville Executive Aviation is the single on-field FBO and handles fueling, ground service, and ramp logistics. The Jet Finder sources FAA Part 135 aircraft sized to Bowman Field's runways, so a charter quote reflects realistic performance from KLOU rather than an aircraft the field cannot support. For larger groups or heavy-jet legs, KSDF five miles away is the practical alternate.
Safety & Planning
Bowman Field is towered approximately 0700-2200 local (119.5; ground 121.8), with RNAV (GPS) approaches to Runways 24 and 33 plus visual procedures. Density altitude at 546 feet MSL stays manageable year-round. The two intersecting runways provide crosswind flexibility, which is valuable given the Ohio River valley's variable winds and seasonal frontal passages.
Operational Restrictions
A noise-abatement program governs Bowman Field: during 2200-0700 a contraflow procedure recommends arrivals from and departures to the south when winds permit, and there are no practice approaches Monday-Saturday 2200-0700 (Sunday until 0900) or when the tower is closed. Turbojets over 30,000 lbs must meet Stage 3 noise standards and obtain prior permission. There is no Customs and Border Protection on field, so international arrivals must clear at a designated port of entry such as KSDF.
Seasonal & Operational Factors
The Ohio River valley delivers four distinct seasons. Winter brings frontal systems that can drop ceilings to IFR minimums and occasional freezing precipitation; summer convective activity tends to build in the late afternoon. Morning departures generally offer the most schedule reliability, and instrument currency is recommended for dependable year-round operations.
Regional Context
Bowman Field anchors a busy Louisville-area GA network alongside KSDF (5 NM), Clark Regional (KJVY, 9 NM) across the river in Indiana, and Godman AAF (KFTK, 24 NM). Its proximity to downtown, the bourbon corridor, and Kentucky's equine country makes it a preferred close-in option for light and midsize private travel into the metro area.
